Art That Inspires me!

Below is a video of me interviewing Kak. I was able to ask some really indepth questions about how it all started for him and what inspires him now. He was really open about about how the graffiti scene has changed and what he thinks of that and has some really good advice that has stayed with me ever since.

These pieces especially inspire me due to their size, the complexity of the images and the colours. I particularly like the designs as a whole. The artists have considered the letters they want to use, but turned them into shapes that could work on their own. Then they have worked out a story and put in a background image to compliment the letters. This give the letters a sense that they belong to the picture and that the person's tag means something more than just a name.

I am also interested in the colour combinations they have used and how they have made all the colours go together. I now want to do much bigger pieces like this!

The first artist is 'ewok'. He is mainly my biggest inspiration. One of the first graffiti videos I ever saw was of him painting. I really like the way his letters all flow and everything just looks like it should be there.

The second and third images are from a french artist called 'weeno'. Paris is one of the most famous places for graffiti because a lot of artists moved there from New York in the 70's and 80's. Art galleries in Paris were more interested in selling work than anywhere else, so lots of styles came together and people from different crews started to get to know each other. The gang culture that started with early graffiti became a lot less important and the art shone through.

The artist to the left is called 'sofles'. He is a very famous artist who is sponsored by a paint company called 'ironlak'. His work is at a very high standard, probably the best in the graffiti world and a standard that a lot of artists would love to be at. He also does huge characters which can look more like an illustration than graffiti writing, a style that is frowned on by the old skool purists!
